Under the direction of Giovanni Francesco Falzacappa, the Presidenza del Censo of the Papal States drew up a Carta topografica del suburbano di Roma (1839), updated in a second edition in 1870. The two works thirty years apart allow us to observe the transformations of the peri-urban territory before Rome became the Capital of the Kingdom of Italy and the city ‘exploded’ outside the Aurelian Walls. The aim of the intervention is to focus on the interpretation of these transformations, through a geo-historical analysis of the territory, integrated with contemporary literary and cartographic sources and the application of GIS tools.
