Abstract

This paper investigates the semantic and conceptual dimensions of paesaggio/paysage and landscape/Landschaft, highlighting both their apparent synonymy and the profound divergences rooted in distinct linguistic and philosophical traditions. Drawing on Wittgenstein, Quine, Benjamin, and Hartshorne, it discusses key theoretical issues related to translation, polysemy, and the construction of a shared disciplinary lexicon. While Romance languages emphasize the inseparable interaction between nature and society within the landscape, Germanic languages stress broader and more abstract territorial meanings. Such semantic tension reflects both the limitations and the potential of the concept itself. In this perspective, landscape emerges as an empirically determining category for geography, able to integrate heterogeneous theoretical and methodological approaches. The analysis shows that terminological equivalence is therefore not given a priori, but is produced within the epistemic practices of the geographical community. Recognizing these differences helps clarify how landscape operates as both a linguistic convention and a shared analytical tool.
